What science knows

Neroli is steam-distilled from the hand-picked blossom of the bitter orange tree. It takes on the order of a tonne of fresh flowers to make about a kilo of oil — one of the costliest floral materials in perfumery. Linalool and linalyl acetate give it its luminous, softly calming character.

What tradition says

Named after a 17th-century Princess of Nerola who scented her gloves and baths with it, neroli has its living home on the southern Mediterranean: in Nabeul, Tunisia, the spring blossom harvest still fills whole streets with its scent.
