What science knows

Frankincense is the resin of small, gnarled Boswellia trees that grow on dry, rocky slopes. When the bark is cut, a milky sap wells up and hardens in the air into pale, translucent tears. Steam-distilled, the resin gives an oil rich in monoterpenes such as α-pinene and limonene — the source of its bright, balsamic, faintly citrus scent.

What tradition says

For thousands of years, frankincense travelled the incense routes from Somalia and southern Arabia to Egypt, Jerusalem and Rome. It was burned in temples, blended into unguents and counted among the most valuable goods of the ancient world.
