What science knows

Benzoin is the balsamic resin that wells up from the bark of styrax trees. It is rich in benzoic and cinnamic acid esters — the source of its soft, vanilla-sweet warmth — and has long been valued as a natural fixative that holds a blend together on the skin.

What tradition says

Traded for centuries along the incense routes from Sumatra to Arabia and Europe, benzoin perfumed temples and was the base of "friar's balsam", the classic apothecary tincture of the 18th century.
